Building Overview

The Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Building opened September 1, 2005. Begun with $33 million appropriated by the 2002 Utah State Legislature and supplemented by generous gifts from the Eccles Family, the faculty and staff of the Health Sciences Center and support from donors from the community, the Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB) is five-story facility with 158,000 GSF. Over 65% of the space in the HSEB, is instructional space. In addition, the building includes the Health Sciences Branch of the University Bookstore and The Point Bistro at the England Hub.

The goal of the Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Building is to provide a state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary facility, supporting world-class education programs. Advanced technologies are integral to instruction throughout the facility. Wireless networking is the core network infrastructure supplemented by over 1,500 hardwired network connections. A custom-designed podium supports complete control of computing, projection, sound, lighting and other presentation hardware. An instructional computing facility includes four computer classroom and a 25 computer, open-access service area. Sixteen 15 person seminar rooms are available for small group instruction. The most technologically intensive area in the HSEB is the Clinical Suite. This facility consists of 18 fully equipped examination rooms which are managed by a system that is capable of real-time digital audio and video recording in each room, saved to a large storage array. The system also handles scheduling and performance of students and standardized patients. The HSEB is connected to and managed by the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library.

Clinical Suite

The Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Building is home to one of the two major Health Sciences Simulation Centers. Since its completion in 2005, the Health Sciences Education Building Clinical Center (HSEBCC) constitutes the most technologically intensive facility within the building. The suites are designed to support clinical education, primarily utilizing standardized patients (patient actors). The centers layout is like a race track with the 18 outpatient examination rooms comprising the exterior ring, which are accessible from the outer circumferential hallway; while the control and observation areas are in the interior core, which houses standardized patients, faculty and staff during learning and training events. Student/standardized patient encounters are managed via B-Line system software, which captures real-time audio/video of the encounter and allows post-encounter review by the students and instructors.
